A leading and pioneer player in Spanish mobility sector

Deeply rooted in the Spanish railway tradition, Alstom has been manufacturing trains in Spain for over 150 years, with a long history of innovation and commitment to Spain's economic and industrial development.

Today Alstom, with more than 3,100 employees, is a strong local employer recognised as one of the leaders on the Spanish market. With local and international focus, Alstom teams in Spain lead mobility projects worldwide. Local excellence centers for digital mobility and manufacturing site have already developed railway projects in 23 countries.

Alstom supports Spanish mobility market through the application of the latest sustainable, innovative and proven technologies that are designed to provide an optimal whole of life cost for our customers while delivering a seamless and superior passenger experience. Alstom has been a pioneer in the railway sector in Spain, with the introduction of the high-speed train, the first automatic metro, state-of-the-art signaling systems, the return of the modern tram to our cities.

Industrial and technological commitment  

With 27 sites in the country, Alstom is the only manufacturer and technologist with local industrial and technological presence for all activities related to railway and sustainable mobility. signalling, infrastructure, train manufacturing, maintenance and digital mobility. Among others, Alstom has an industrial plant in Barcelona dedicated to the manufacture of all types of rolling stock, a propulsion systems factory in Biscay and, in Madrid, different technological innovation centres for the development of projects in the fields of railway safety, signalling, maintenance and digital mobility.

  • Tains and tractions systems

    Alstom has one of the most technologically advanced rolling stock industrial plants in Europe in Barcelona, capable of manufacturing all types of trains. In addition, the factory in Trápaga (Basque Country) is one of the company's centres of excellence for traction and control systems supplied worldwide.

  • Signalling and Digital Mobility

    Alstom Spain employs over 650 technicians and engineers dedicated to the development and implementation of state of the art signalling and safety solutions for all types of railway infrastructure and rolling stock. The R&D laboratories located in Madrid develop digital solutions to respond to the mobility
    challenges of the 21 st century.

  • Services

    Alstom offers a variety of customised services to public and private operators. The objective is to guarantee optimised, safe and overall management of rolling stock and other railway equipment over their life cycle whether manufactured by Alstom or by third parties: maintenance, renovation, spare parts management, support and technical assistance. Alstom also has its own industrial sites in Getafe and Pinto (for the repair of equipment and components) as well as for Digital Services activities.

  • Infrastructure and Systems

    The infrastructure unit provides turnkey projects, integrated systems and other infrastructure solutions installation of track and electrification systems, maintenance workshops, electromechanical and tunnel safety systems, etc. Barcelona Tramway and APM at Adolfo Suárez airport in Madrid are examples of turnkey projects developed by Alstom’s teams in Spain.

  • Leading expertise in ERTMS

    Leading expertise in ERTMS

    Alstom signalling teams in Spain have developed latest ERTMS technologies for the high-speed (Albacete -Alicante, Atlantic Corridor, Valladolid-Leon-Burgos & Extremadura corridor) and suburban networks (Madrid and Barcelona). Alstom ETCS on-board solution equips also over 500 trains running in Spain (high speed, regional and suburban)

  • APM Madrid Barajas

    APM Madrid Barajas

    APM (Automated People Mover) integrated system for Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport. First 100% automatic system in Spain, that connects Terminal T4 with the satellite terminal (T4S) in Madrid Barajas. Alstom is in charge of the full system, including operation and maintenance services.

  • Metro Madrid: Propulsion and signalling

    Metro Madrid: Propulsion and signalling

    50% of Madrid's Metro passengers currently travel under the supervision of signalling systems developed at Alstom sites in Spain. Alstom Spain has also been in charge of propulsion and control equipment for more than 650 Madrid Metro units (Series 2000-B, Series 5000 2nd and 4th and Series 6000).

  • Pioneers in high-speed

    Pioneers in high-speed

    Three decades ago, Alstom delivered the first high-speed train in Spain. Since then, we have been a pioneer in all the major milestones in Spain, included the so-called lanzaderas for Renfe, the first high-speed train crossing the Pyrenees -and able to run in both Spanish and French networks-, or the first high-speed train in the liberalized market.

  • Metro Barcelona

    Metro Barcelona

    Alstom is manufacturing at our Santa Perpètua site 50 new metros for TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona). Based on the Metropolis range, the new trains are ready to run on driverless networks. They also add the highest requirements in terms of sustainability, passenger comfort, connectivity, and accessibility.

  • High-Capacity commuter trains for Renfe

    High-Capacity commuter trains for Renfe

    In March 2021, Alstom won a contract to supply Renfe with 152 High-Capacity trains and, in December 2022, was awarded to supply 49 additional units. The new trains will allow Renfe to transport at least 20% more passengers per hour in the country’s most congested railway hubs. The trains boast an innovative mixed-configuration design, with both single and double-decker cars, designed specifically to meet the evolving mobility needs of major urban centres, such as Madrid or Barcelona.

  • HealthHub™ and digital services

    HealthHub™ and digital services

    The Alstom Services team in Spain implements digital maintenance tools, IoT technologies and predictive algorithms with the aim of improving train availability, reducing time spent in workshops and, in short, decreasing the total life cycle costs of urban and intercity fleets.

  • Traction systems

    Traction systems

    At Trapaga industrial site, near Bilbao, Alstom develops traction, propulsion systems for all power types: from very high-speed, to regional and commuter trains, locomotives, metros or monorail.
