Motors at a glance
- Solutions for all railway rolling stock
- Leader in permanent magnet motors
- Best-in-class expertise
- A local presence worldwide
Alstom offers an extensive range of motors, from 50 kW to 1600 kW, to suit all types of rolling stock and their different operating and integration requirements and generate the best performance, reliability, energy savings and life cycle costs. Generators are also part of the Alstom portfolio, covering 300 kW to 800 kW for regional and locomotive applications.
A wide range for all needs
Alstom offers its customers a wide series of optimised solutions: asynchronous or synchronous (permanent magnet technology) motors, closed or open motors, different cooling and ventilation options, together with winterisation and tropicalisation options if required. Alstom’s motors can be fitted to non-Alstom rolling stock as well: our experts always guarantee the optimal integration of motors in the bogie and with the traction chain.
Leading the way in permanent magnet motor technology
Alstom is an acknowledged forerunner in permanent magnet motor (PMM) technology, a high-performance and economical innovation already adopted by tram trains, trams, monorails and automatic metros, as well as regional trains, high-speed trains and locomotives. The advantages of a synchronous PMM comes from its lighter weight and compactness compared with asynchronous motors, which together with a higher power-to-weight ratio, provide vehicles with higher performances for reduced operating costs. Maintenance costs are also reduced as PMMs are closed motors, preventing external harm from pollution, dirt and extreme weather.
A broad range of architectures for asynchronous motors
Alstom’s portfolio also includes a broad range of asynchronous motor technologies, such as highly compact solutions with an optimised interface with the gearbox, form or random wires, and all the different cooling types (self-ventilated, forced ventilated, watercooled). The range also includes motors specially tailored for energy saving and noise reduction.
Innovation and proximity
For more than a century, Alstom’s expertise in motors has been deployed in excellence and design centres
in Ornans (France), Västerås (Sweden), and Vienna (Austria), guaranteeing the validity of the company’s latest cutting-edge innovation. In addition to the Lead Centers Unit in Europe, the sites in China, United States, India, and South Africa offer local proximity to customers to guarantee the best solutions for their requirements. Alstom also offers a range of customised services to maintain and repair rolling stock and subsystems throughout their lifecycle, giving customers and their passengers improved availability.
